Jackson reports nation’s highest homicide rate in 2023

The city of Jackson had the highest homicide rate in the nation last year, according to recent data.

Experts note that each murder incurs costs for law enforcement, judicial proceedings, and victim services. Crime also discourages investment and hampers economic growth, making it harder to attract jobs and families to Mississippi.

A national study found that adding police officers can reduce homicides, with each new officer preventing approximately 0.06 to 0.1 murders annually. Advocates say increased law enforcement spending could lead to lower crime rates and a stronger economy.
