Hardeman County Unemployment Ranks 4th Highest in Tennessee

Hardeman County unemployment stood at 4.6% in September 2026, tied for the fourth-highest rate among Tennessee’s 95 counties, according to new figures from the Tennessee Department of Labor and Workforce Development. The numbers cover Middleton, Bolivar, Whiteville and the rest of the county just north of the Mississippi line.

The rate was still an improvement. The state reported that every Tennessee county saw its jobless rate fall from August to September.

How Hardeman County Unemployment Compares

Hardeman’s 4.6% tied Meigs County in East Tennessee. Only a few counties posted higher rates:

  • Perry County: 5.1%, down 0.4 points from August
  • Hancock County: 5.0%, down 0.5 points
  • Hardeman and Meigs counties: 4.6%
  • Lauderdale and Greene counties: 4.5%
  • Shelby, Lake and Pickett counties: 4.4%
  • Decatur County: 4.3%

Several West Tennessee counties appear on that list, including neighboring Shelby and Lauderdale counties. At the other end, Williamson, Wilson, Rutherford and five other mostly Middle Tennessee counties had the state’s lowest rate, 2.7%.

Tennessee Rate Holds Steady

Statewide, Tennessee’s seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 3.4% for the third month in a row, matching the lowest level of the year. That is well below the national rate of 4.2%.

County rates are not seasonally adjusted, so they can move up and down with harvest work, school calendars and holiday hiring. A single month is best read as one point in a trend, not a final verdict on the local economy.

What It Means Locally

Hardeman County has dealt with job losses this year, including the expected layoff of 127 workers at Kilgore Flares that the Magnolia Post reported earlier. Across the state line, Benton County, Mississippi, reported a 3.3% unemployment rate for August, down from 4.2% in July, according to federal labor data.

Because Middleton sits just north of Walnut and the Mississippi line, the job picture for local families depends on the regional economy on both sides of the border, not only on Hardeman County’s own number. Employers in Tippah, Alcorn and Benton counties in Mississippi are part of that picture, along with those in Bolivar and the rest of West Tennessee.

Job seekers in the Middleton area can search openings and get help with resumes and training through Tennessee’s American Job Center network and the state’s careers website, which Tennessee recently upgraded.
