Memorial Day honors U.S. service members who died in service

Memorial Day is set aside to honor U.S. military personnel who died while serving, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs said. Observances this year focused on remembrance and tribute to the fallen.

Messages and ceremonies emphasized the courage and sacrifice of those who gave their lives for the country. Many observers expressed gratitude and called for lasting remembrance of their service.

Communities traditionally mark the holiday with ceremonies, moments of silence and visits to cemeteries, the Department of Veterans Affairs noted. Those events are intended to recognize the service and sacrifice of the nation’s military members.

Officials and participants urged Americans to remember the dead with gratitude and respect and to reflect on the costs of freedom.
