Mississippi DOT Donates Truck to Hinds County for Litter Removal

Jackson Mayor John Horhn, Hinds County Sheriff Tyree Jones, and Mississippi Transportation Commission Chairman Willie Simmons gathered Wednesday to mark a new collaboration. Simmons presented a truck to assist with inmate litter removal efforts in Jackson.

Mayor Horhn praised the partnership, saying, “We think this is a great collaboration between the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office, the City of Jackson – Government, MDOT, and the Mississippi Department of Corrections. The whole idea is to beautify roadways in and around our Capital City. That is the goal.”

MDOT partners with local counties to use inmate labor for litter pickup along the state’s right-of-ways. The department provides transportation mileage reimbursements, hourly supervisor reimbursements, and vehicles when available, according to a department spokesman.
