The National Weather Service in Memphis said the area is entering the fourth day of a heat wave and has raised the heat risk to Level 4 of 4, or “Extreme,” for much of its coverage area.
The office said many locations will reach about 100 degrees, and when combined with high humidity heat indices could soar to near 110 degrees.
The NWS urged residents to hydrate constantly, avoid outdoor exposure during peak afternoon hours and check on elderly neighbors and other vulnerable people, the agency said.
The Weather Service also warned pet owners that hot pavement can burn paws and recommended limiting walks and keeping animals indoors. The NWS advised residents to know the signs of heat illness and take precautions, the office said.
