All of Mississippi is under an Extreme Heat Warning or Heat Advisory for July 28, 2026, the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said, with heat index values that could reach 110 to 115 degrees and increase the risk of heat-related illnesses.
MEMA advised residents to drink plenty of water, even if they do not feel thirsty; take frequent breaks in air-conditioned buildings; and wear lightweight, light-colored clothing.
The agency warned people to limit outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day and to never leave children or pets in a parked vehicle, saying temperatures can become deadly within minutes.
MEMA offered pet-specific guidance, urging owners to bring animals indoors when possible, provide plenty of fresh water and shade if pets must stay outside, and walk dogs early in the morning or later in the evening to avoid hot pavement that can burn paws.
The agency encouraged residents to stay weather aware and stay hydrated, reiterating that the combination of high heat and humidity increases the likelihood of serious health impacts.
