Officials Urge Flood Mitigation as Mississippi Faces Flooding

Organizers of Flood Awareness Week urged residents to take steps to reduce flood damage, saying flooding has affected parts of Mississippi and additional rain is forecast for the rest of the week, organizers said.

They recommended that homeowners and business owners find out whether their property is in a floodplain, identify roads in the area that are prone to flooding and plan alternate routes, and know the quickest path to higher ground, organizers said.

Organizers also urged residents to consider purchasing flood insurance, noting that most homeowners insurance policies do not cover flood damage, organizers said.

They warned people never to drive through flooded roadways, saying 6 inches of moving water can knock a person off their feet and 1 foot of water can carry away most vehicles. Organizers said taking mitigation steps now can help reduce impacts on homes, property and finances.
