Officials urge Mississippians to identify flood risks as Arthur remnants cause flooding
Emergency officials urged residents to identify local flood risks as remnants of Tropical Storm Arthur cause flooding in parts of Mississippi, officials said.
They said flooding can occur anywhere heavy rainfall overwhelms drainage systems, creeks and roadways. Officials advised residents to know which roads in their communities are prone to flooding, to monitor forecasts, weather alerts and local emergency information, and to avoid driving through flooded areas.
Public safety officials warned that even shallow water can be dangerous. They said 6 inches of moving water can knock an adult off their feet, and 1 foot of water can carry away most vehicles.
Officials urged motorists to never drive around barricades and to delay travel if conditions are unsafe until local authorities lift warnings or clear roads.
