Experts advise pet owners to keep animals cool during hot summer months

Columbus, Miss. — As the heat continues to climb, pet owners are urged to take extra precautions to keep their animals safe. Kim Hays of the Columbus-Lowndes Humane Society said heat exhaustion and heat stroke are common issues for pets during the summer.

Hays recommends watching for signs of overheating in dogs, such as excessive panting and lethargy. She noted that animals control their temperature through panting and can quickly become overwhelmed in hot weather.

To help pets stay cool, she suggests providing shaded areas and water. Hays advised using tarps or natural shade, like trees, and filling kiddie pools with lukewarm water for dogs to cool off. She emphasized the importance of keeping animals out of direct sunlight to prevent heat-related illnesses.

The Humane Society has also seen an increase in animals brought in during the summer months. Hays said the numbers tend to spike along with temperatures, especially in the South. The organization is currently running an adoption special, and those interested can find more information on their Facebook page or by contacting them directly.

Officials stress that pet owners should actively monitor their animals and ensure they have access to shade and water during the hottest parts of the day to prevent heat-related health issues.
