Mississippi reports 26 injuries after tornadoes cross state

Twenty-six people have been injured in Mississippi following a series of tornadoes that moved through the state on May 6 and 7, according to the Mississippi Emergency Management Agency.

Most injuries, 22, occurred in Lincoln County, with three reported in Lamar County and one in Franklin County, MEMA said Sunday afternoon. No fatalities have been reported, officials added.

Assessments have been completed in Lamar, Lawrence, and Franklin counties. An evaluation in Lincoln County is scheduled for Monday. As of Sunday, eight roads remained impassable due to debris in Lincoln County, MEMA said.

Gov. Tate Reeves noted that more than 100 homes, businesses, and public buildings statewide were affected by the storms, though he said numbers could change as assessments continue.

Power outages have decreased significantly, with about 1,460 customers still without electricity Sunday afternoon. That figure was more than 20,000 at the storm’s peak. Nearly half of the outages were reported in Lincoln County, with Clarke, Newton, and Franklin counties each reporting 130 or more outages, officials said.

Reeves pledged ongoing recovery efforts, saying, “The state of Mississippi is in this for the long haul. Together, we will recover and rebuild.”
