Reporters seek witnesses, video in Senatobia Walmart shooting that killed 1-year-old
Investigative reporters from Mississippi Today and The New York Times asked for help identifying witnesses and video tied to a June 14 police shooting outside the Walmart Supercenter on Highway 51 in Senatobia that killed 1-year-old Kohen Wiley, the organizations said.
State and local authorities, including the local police department and the Department of Public Safety, have released few details, the reporters said. None of those agencies have released body-worn or dashboard camera video, and Walmart has not released surveillance footage, they said.
The reporters said police were responding to a complaint of shoplifting. The confrontation involving the child’s mother and her friend ended after officers shot into their car, and the only published video shows the car driving away after being shot at. No other witnesses have publicly come forward, the reporters said.
Mississippi Today and The New York Times asked anyone who was at the Walmart before, during or after the shooting, who works there, or who has photos or video to contact them. The organizations said they will not use a source’s name or information without consent.
Reporters provided contact information: email jcranney@veritenews.org, Signal @mmj.2178 and a mailing address, P.O. Box 12267, Jackson, MS 39236. The organizations said audio recording of the request is automated for accessibility and that humans wrote and edited the notice.
