Tupelo woman charged with child abuse after 5 year old autistic child died over weekend

Tupelo woman has been charged with multiple counts of child abuse after her autistic 5 year old was found with multiple burns. Tupelo police said the following over the weekend related to the case:

Death Investigation Underway

On 01-15-2023 at approximately 10:30 am Tupelo Police responded to a Gun Club Road address for a death investigation.

Tragically a 5 y/o has died. Detectives are in the very early stages of the investigation. If anyone has information about this case they are encouraged to contact TPD at 662-841-6491, tpdrecords@tupeloms.gov or Crimestoppers at 1-800-773-TIPS.

Brianna Nichole Young, 27, of Gun Club Road, Tupelo, was charged Tuesday afternoon with two counts of child abuse and one count of child deprivation of necessities with substantial harm.

She was ordered held on a $1 million bond after her 5-year-old autistic son died Sunday.

Tupelo police detective Jacob Whitlock said at the hospital, officials noticed lash marks on the child’s back, injuries to his buttocks, as well as bruising and scarring all over his body.

Young later admitted to hitting the child, who was non-verbal, with a curling iron.

Additional charges could come pending the results of an autopsy.
