Trump heads to G7 summit amid Iran deal announcement
President Donald Trump arrived in the French Alps on Monday to attend the G7 summit, coming off the heels of an announcement that he said would end the U.S. war with Iran. The agreement, whose details have not been publicly released, follows days of negotiations and recent strikes between Israel and Iran-backed Hezbollah militants in Lebanon, which cast uncertainty over the talks.
Trump’s announcement has shifted the dynamic ahead of the summit, where key issues like demining the Strait of Hormuz and regional stability are expected to dominate discussions. The White House said Trump plans to discuss efforts to clear mines from the strategic waterway, which has seen halted tanker traffic during the conflict.
French President Emmanuel Macron, this year’s summit host, plans to convene a session on the Middle East with Egypt, Qatar, and the United Arab Emirates, focusing on Iran, Lebanon, and regional security. Leaders of the G7 nations issued a joint statement welcoming the Iran agreement as a step toward regional stability and economic recovery, emphasizing the need for rapid and comprehensive implementation.
Meanwhile, Trump warned France’s Macron in an interview that the U.S. could impose 100% tariffs on French wines if Paris proceeds with a digital tax targeting American tech companies. The Trump administration has historically criticized the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, which he exited in 2018, arguing it failed to limit Iran’s nuclear ambitions.
Trump also held calls with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and Russian President Vladimir Putin ahead of the summit. Zelenskyy reported discussing improvements on Ukraine’s eastern front, while Putin emphasized the importance of ending hostilities and cited recent strikes as complicating factors in negotiations.
