A.J. Brown’s highly anticipated debut with the New England Patriots was interrupted by an apparent injury in the third quarter of Wednesday’s NFL season opener against the Seattle Seahawks.
Brown appeared to suffer the injury while attempting to make a catch at Lumen Field. He was rolled into by a Seahawks defender and remained on the field before being tended to by medical personnel. Brown then made his way to the sideline without assistance and later entered the medical tent before leaving the field wearing only one cleat.
He was later ruled out for the remainder of the game due to an ankle injury. Brown finished with three catches for 26 yards and drew a 34-yard pass interference penalty that helped set up the Patriots’ first touchdown. At that point, New England led 10-0.
The game was a rematch of Super Bowl LX, which Seattle won 29-10 in February. The Seahawks’ starting quarterback, Sam Darnold, left the game in the first quarter and was later ruled out. Drew Lock replaced Darnold under center for Seattle.
Brown’s injury was a setback for the Patriots, who maintained a 10-3 lead over Seattle heading into the fourth quarter.
