Rep. Stephen Lynch, a Massachusetts Democrat known for his conservative stances, has secured a victory over challenger Patrick Roath in the primary election for the 8th Congressional District. Lynch, in office since 2001, faced a well-funded campaign from Roath, an attorney and former aide to former Gov. Deval Patrick, who outraised Lynch by about $300,000.
The campaign featured sharp disagreements over immigration, healthcare, campaign finance, and housing policies. Roath criticized Lynch’s support for the Laken Riley Act, legislation requiring federal authorities to detain certain migrants accused of crimes, which Lynch defended as a response to an out-of-control immigration system. Roath called the bill shortsighted and linked Lynch’s vote to broader concerns about the Trump administration’s immigration policies.
On healthcare, Roath advocated for Medicare for All and universal coverage, while Lynch supported a public option and criticized for-profit hospitals. Lynch was one of a few Democrats to vote against the Affordable Care Act, citing concerns over concessions to insurance companies. Roath campaigned as an outsider populist, contrasting his background as a corporate lawyer with Lynch’s history as an iron worker, union president, and lawyer.
The primary also reflected a generational divide. Lynch is 71, while Roath is 39. Both candidates attracted notable endorsements, with Roath backed by groups including Indivisible and the Massachusetts Teachers Association, and Lynch supported by unions such as the Massachusetts AFL-CIO and the Boston Firefighters.
While Lynch has previously described his political stance as moderate, he has shifted leftward in recent years, now supporting Planned Parenthood and pro-choice legislation. The district, heavily Democratic, is represented by a retiring incumbent, with GOP nominee Robert Burke seeking to challenge the Democrat in the general election.
