Gas tax holiday proposed amid looming transportation funding crisis

Suspending the federal gasoline tax could save drivers up to 18.4 cents per gallon, according to estimates. However, the move would deplete funds designated for road construction and maintenance, which are already under financial strain, experts say.

The federal gas tax, which funds the Highway Trust Fund, is a key source of revenue for transportation projects across the country. Its suspension has gained support as a way to provide immediate relief at the pump.

Transportation officials and industry advocates warn that halting the tax could lead to longer-term problems. The fund is already facing shortfalls, and reducing its income could delay or cancel critical infrastructure projects.

Some policymakers argue that a gas tax holiday offers temporary relief for consumers but acknowledge it could worsen the infrastructure funding crisis if implemented without alternative revenue sources.

The debate comes as the nation grapples with ongoing transportation needs and the rising costs of infrastructure maintenance and repair.
