Hurricanes beat Golden Knights 3-0 to win Stanley Cup; Brind’Amour makes history

CAROLINA HURRICANES — The Carolina Hurricanes beat the Vegas Golden Knights 3-0 in Game 6 on Sunday night in Las Vegas to win the Stanley Cup, ending a 20-year drought for the franchise, Fox News reported.

Taylor Hall scored about three minutes into the game to give Carolina an early lead, and Jackson Blake added a goal with just under seven minutes left in the second period, according to Fox News. Nikolaj Ehlers sealed the victory with an empty-net goal in the third, and the Golden Knights managed just three shots on goal in the second period, Fox News said.

Rookie goaltender Brandon Bussi recorded the shutout after replacing Frederik Andersen in Game 3, Fox News reported. Carolina killed a key Vegas power play midway through the third period, and Vegas pulled goalie Carter Hart with about three minutes remaining in a bid to rally, but the comeback attempt failed, according to Fox News.

Rod Brind’Amour became the 14th person to win the Stanley Cup as both a player and a head coach, and the first to do so since Larry Robinson in 2000, Fox News reported. Brind’Amour also became the seventh person to win the Cup coaching the same team he won with as a player, a feat not accomplished since Toe Blake 70 years ago, Fox News said.

The victory capped a long-awaited breakthrough for the Hurricanes, who made the playoffs eight consecutive seasons after missing the previous nine and had lost multiple conference finals and semifinals in that span, Fox News reported.
