Former National Guardsman pleads guilty in slaying of Army sergeant at Augusta base
Natravien R. Landry, 27, pleaded guilty June 11 to second-degree murder and to using a firearm during and in relation to a crime of violence in the killing of U.S. Army Sgt. Andre S. Stewart Jr., federal prosecutors said. Landry faces a minimum of 10 years and up to life in federal prison, prosecutors said.
Prosecutors said the shooting occurred the morning of Dec. 14, 2024, at an apartment on what was then Fort Eisenhower, now known as Fort Gordon, in Augusta, Georgia. According to a probable cause arrest affidavit, Landry was on a break from drill duty when he went to the woman’s home and found Stewart in a bedroom.
A witness told authorities Landry noticed a black truck parked outside and asked who owned it before entering the apartment, the affidavit said. The woman said she and Stewart were sleeping when she heard a commotion and that two children were present. The affidavit says Landry, who knew Stewart was unarmed, shot him once in the chest; Stewart was later pronounced dead.
Authorities said Landry fled the residence and the military base but was arrested during a traffic stop on Interstate 85 by the Meriwether County Sheriff’s Office. Deputies recovered a handgun Landry had thrown from a vehicle, and testing linked the weapon to the shooting, prosecutors said. Landry admitted to the shooting in a Mirandized interview, prosecutors added.
The woman told investigators Landry was jealous of Stewart, prosecutors said. Stewart’s sister wrote after the shooting that her brother was “viciously murdered” and said he left a 5-year-old son who was one of the children in the apartment at the time. A sentencing date for Landry has not been set, prosecutors said.
