Judge blocks DOJ nationwide voter-roll collection effort

A federal judge in Washington on Oct. 10, 2026 barred the Justice Department from continuing a nationwide effort to collect state voter registration records and identify suspected non-U.S. citizens, preventing the Trump administration from running the program even in states that had volunteered to cooperate.

The Hill reported that U.S. District Judge Sparkle Sooknanan ruled the department exceeded its legal authority and violated federal privacy laws.

The Hill published the report Oct. 10, 2026.
