Sen. Ed Markey wins Massachusetts primary, backed by progressive supporters including Hasan Piker

Sen. Ed Markey, a 80-year-old Democrat from Massachusetts, won his primary race against a younger challenger, Rep. Seth Moulton. The victory secures Markey’s spot on the ballot for the November general election, where he is favored to win in the deeply Democratic state.

Markey’s campaign emphasized his progressive credentials, including support for climate legislation and transgender rights. He repeatedly challenged Moulton’s claims of being a true progressive and highlighted his advocacy for policies such as the Green New Deal. Markey also defended his stance on transgender athletes, asserting that they reflect Massachusetts’ values.

The race drew attention from progressive figures and activists. Hasan Piker, a Twitch streamer and activist known for supporting progressive causes, celebrated Markey’s win on social media, calling it a victory for their movement. Piker’s remarks came after Markey’s defeat of Moulton, who focused on generational change and positioned himself as a more centrist alternative.

Political analysts noted Markey’s ability to adapt politically over his five decades in office. David Axelrod, a former adviser to President Barack Obama, credited Markey’s shift to progressive priorities for his political longevity. Axelrod pointed out that Markey, first elected in 1976, initially held conservative views but pivoted to support issues like climate change and social justice.

Sen. Bernie Sanders also praised Markey’s victory, emphasizing his role in fighting economic inequality and supporting working families. Markey’s primary win sets him up to face Republican Kevin O’Connor in the general election. The Massachusetts senator last won re-election with more than 66% of the vote.
