O.J. Simpson-era lawyer warns of racial parallels as Karmelo Anthony trial continues

An attorney who successfully fought to keep cameras in O.J. Simpson’s murder trial said he sees troubling parallels between that case and the Karmelo Anthony murder trial, which heads into its third day Saturday, Royal Oakes told Fox News Digital.

Karmelo Anthony is accused of fatally stabbing fellow student Austin Metcalf during a confrontation at a Texas track meet. He has pleaded not guilty, and his defense team is expected to argue he acted in self-defense, court filings show and Oakes noted.

The case has ignited intense online debate and drawn supporters to the courthouse, Oakes said. “We’re likely to see the exact same dynamic developing in this case that we saw in the O.J. Simpson murder trial,” he told Fox News Digital, saying a “huge cultural and racial divide” is emerging.

Oakes warned the greatest risk in any high-profile case is letting race or politics overshadow the evidence. “It is certainly possible that racial narratives can overshadow the actual facts in a case,” he said, adding that exuberant public demonstrations can begin to influence perceptions. He pointed to public reaction after the Rodney King verdict in Los Angeles as an example.

Oakes also contrasted the 1990s media environment with today’s constant stream of viral clips and social posts. “Today, it’s so different,” he told Fox News Digital. “I don’t think you’re going to get anybody to sit down and watch eight hours a day of a trial. Instead, you’re going to see 800 snippets on social media.” He said people tended to take sides along racial lines in the Simpson case and urged that potential jurors must convince lawyers and the judge they can be objective.
