Security experts warn of vulnerabilities after White House Correspondents’ Dinner shooting

A shooting at the White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner has highlighted significant security vulnerabilities surrounding President Donald Trump and other top U.S. officials, according to former Defense Department intelligence officer Andrew Badger.

The incident occurred April 25 at the Washington Hilton Hotel when a suspect, identified as 31-year-old Cole Thomas Allen of Torrance, California, stormed a security checkpoint and opened fire. Allen was taken into custody and appeared in court Monday.

Badger told Fox News Digital that the breach could increase Iran’s motivation to target Trump and senior officials amid rising tensions between Washington and Tehran. He warned that the event’s security lapses could be exploited by adversaries, especially given the presence of key political and military leaders, including the top three in the presidential line of succession.

“If this individual had been wearing a suicide vest or used a drone, the consequences could have been catastrophic,” Badger said. He noted that eight of the nine individuals in the line of succession attended the event, raising concerns about potential worst-case scenarios.

The incident occurs against a backdrop of escalating tensions with Iran, which has publicly expressed a desire for revenge over the 2020 killing of Qassem Soleimani, the commander of Iran’s Quds Force. The U.S. drone strike near Baghdad International Airport, ordered by Trump, led to threats from Iran’s leadership, including Ayatollah Khamenei warning of “severe revenge.”

Badger emphasized that Iran and other adversaries increasingly rely on unconventional tactics, such as contracting criminals or gangsters to conduct hybrid warfare. He called for enhanced security measures, including a dedicated White House ballroom, to better protect officials at high-profile events.

Following the shooting, Trump advocated for more secure venues, stating that a dedicated White House ballroom would provide the necessary security features for such gatherings.
