Wembanyama has 41, 24 rebounds as Spurs beat Thunder 122-115 in double OT
Victor Wembanyama scored 41 points and grabbed 24 rebounds to lead the San Antonio Spurs to a 122-115 double-overtime victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder in Game 1 of the Western Conference Finals, Fox Sports reported.
Wembanyama, a 7-foot-4 center, hit a turnaround 3-pointer with 11.5 seconds left in the fourth quarter to give San Antonio a 101-99 lead. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, who was named the NBA’s most valuable player before the series, drove for a tying layup with 3.1 seconds remaining to force overtime, according to Fox Sports.
The teams traded momentum in the first overtime. Alex Caruso came off the bench to lead Oklahoma City with 31 points and hit his eighth 3-pointer of the game to cut San Antonio’s lead. Jalen Williams added 26 points for the Thunder, and Gilgeous-Alexander finished with 24 points, 12 assists and five steals on 7-of-23 shooting, Fox Sports said.
Wembanyama tied the game again with a 27-foot 3 with 27 seconds left in the second overtime. He scored nine points in the extra session while the Spurs tightened defensively. Stephon Castle finished with 11 assists for San Antonio, and rookie Dylan Harper had 24 points, 11 rebounds, six assists and a game-high seven steals, Fox Sports reported.
The win snapped Oklahoma City’s playoff winning streak that dated to Game 6 of last season’s NBA Finals, Fox Sports noted. The Spurs now lead the Western Conference Finals 1-0 as the series moves to Game 2.
