The new Bolivar hospital being built by West Tennessee Healthcare is in its final stages of construction and is scheduled to open Monday, Nov. 9, 2026, according to a Sept. 28 report from Hatchie Press. The replacement facility on Vildo Road off Highway 64 will serve Hardeman County, including Middleton, with a larger emergency department, inpatient beds and several outpatient services under one roof.
The project replaces the current West Tennessee Healthcare Bolivar Hospital, which was built in 1974. Hospital leaders say the new building is designed to give rural patients modern care closer to home.
What the New Bolivar Hospital Will Offer
According to the Hatchie Press report, the new hospital at 760 Vildo Road in Bolivar will include:
12 emergency department rooms, up from the current nine, which the hospital describes as about a 25 percent expansion in emergency capacity
Six inpatient beds
Twice as many negative-pressure isolation rooms, used to care for patients with infectious illnesses
Enhanced imaging and diagnostic capabilities
A sleep lab, cardiac rehabilitation, swing-bed services and physical therapy
Ruby Kirby, CEO of West Tennessee Healthcare’s Bolivar and Camden hospitals, told Hatchie Press the health system is excited it “can make this commitment to rural communities.”
How the Project Came Together
West Tennessee Healthcare’s project page describes the building as a rural emergency hospital that will house inpatient beds, outpatient services and an emergency room. The City of Bolivar donated the land on Vildo Road for the facility.
Part of the construction cost is covered by a $9.61 million award from the Tennessee Department of Health’s Healthcare Resiliency Program, announced in July 2023. The health system held a groundbreaking ceremony on July 28, 2025, and has posted construction progress updates through 2026. Its April update said the work was moving steadily toward completion later this year.
The negative-pressure isolation rooms were planned with infectious disease preparedness in mind, a lesson many rural hospitals took from the COVID-19 pandemic.
What It Means for Middleton and Hardeman County
For families in Middleton and across Hardeman County, the Bolivar hospital is the county’s local option for emergency care. More emergency rooms should help reduce crowding during busy stretches, and adding services such as cardiac rehab, physical therapy and a sleep lab means some patients may not have to travel to Jackson or Memphis for follow-up care.
Residents in the Walnut and north Tippah County area who live near the state line may also find the new facility a convenient choice.
