Tippah County sports roundup, Sept. 13: Walnut splits tournament; Jones, Massengill pace runners

Walnut came away from a demanding volleyball tournament with two wins Saturday, while Landon Jones and Jenna-Lynne Massengill earned top-six cross-country finishes. Blue Mountain Christian also completed a busy day on the volleyball court and soccer field, according to TippahSports.com.

Walnut goes the distance in Tupelo

All four Walnut matches went three sets. The Lady Wildcats rallied past Lake Cormorant, 22-25, 25-10, 15-12, and beat Olive Branch 2-1. Losses to New Albany and host Tupelo left Walnut 19-4.

Jones takes third; Massengill finishes sixth

Walnut’s Landon Jones ran 19:30 for third in the Hickory Flat Invitational’s 1A-3A boys 5K in Blue Mountain. Teammate Evelin Aguilar finished 15th in the girls race in 26:16. Falkner’s Kady Duncan was 30th in 30:18, and Pine Grove’s Mariah Waldon placed 69th in 39:39.

At the Tupelo Invitational, Ripley’s Jenna-Lynne Massengill took sixth in the 1A-4A girls 5K in 23:03.1. Blue Mountain’s Cason Gentry and Caleb Galvez finished 29th and 30th in the boys race, separated by six-tenths of a second.

Monday’s volleyball schedule sends Ripley to Kossuth and Falkner to New Site at 6 p.m. Pine Grove hosts East Union and Walnut hosts Baldwyn at 6:30 p.m. Read TippahSports.com’s county results and schedule.

BMCU volleyball drops two in Kentucky

Blue Mountain Christian fell to 4-6 after losing twice Saturday in Columbia, Kentucky. The Toppers won the third set 25-13 against Lindsey Wilson but lost the match 3-1. No. 10 Cumberlands then swept BMCU, 25-16, 25-20, 25-19.

Marissa Gerleman had eight kills against Lindsey Wilson. Salice Speed recorded nine kills and 10 digs against Cumberlands. BMCU opens its home schedule Tuesday against Freed-Hardeman. Read the full volleyball report.

Toppers draw 1-1 with Point

Blue Mountain Christian men’s soccer moved to 3-1-2 overall and 1-0-1 in SSAC play after Saturday’s draw in West Point, Georgia. Guilherme Aguiar scored at 24:36 on an assist from Sammuel Davi Cavalcante. Point equalized less than two minutes later, and neither team scored again. BMCU goalkeeper Luan Nascimento made two saves.
