Port of Gulfport Approves Deepening Project as U.S. Army Corps Recommends Channel Expansion

The Port of Gulfport has cleared a significant hurdle in its efforts to deepen and widen its federal channel, a move that could enhance its long-term competitiveness. Lt. Gen. William H. “Butch” Graham Jr., the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers chief of engineers, signed the Chief’s Report recommending the project for congressional authorization, according to the Corps.

The project, valued at an estimated $548 million, would deepen the channel from 36 to 46 feet and widen it from 300 to 350 feet. Once authorized, the next step involves securing funding, which is expected to be split 75% federal and 25% state and local funds, the Corps said.

Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves called the development a major win for the state. “Deepening the Port of Gulfport to 46 feet means bigger ships, more cargo, and a wider array of logistics opportunities,” Reeves said in a statement. “This expanded gateway for commerce will continue our state’s momentum toward global economic leadership.”

Port CEO Jon Nass highlighted the project’s importance for the port’s future. “This milestone reflects years of collaboration and positions the Port of Gulfport for long-term growth, supply chain resilience, and economic opportunity,” Nass said. He credited Mississippi’s leadership and congressional delegation for their advocacy, including Gov. Reeves, Senators Wicker and Hyde-Smith, and Congressman Ezell.

The planned improvements will allow the port to better accommodate larger vessels and attract new business across the Gulf Coast. Gulfport is a key hub for container trade, breakbulk cargo, refrigerated imports and exports, and blue economy initiatives, including uncrewed maritime systems research.

The project’s approval marks a critical step forward for Mississippi’s economic development, building on recent investments and reinforcing Gulfport’s role as a strategic gateway for regional and national trade, according to officials.
