FEMA offers guidance to applicants after Tropical Storm Arthur

FEMA urged residents affected by Tropical Storm Arthur (DR-4930) to follow several steps when applying for federal assistance, saying the measures can help the application process.

If an application is denied, applicants may be able to appeal, FEMA said. The agency advised people to read their full FEMA letter carefully for instructions and deadlines on appeals.

FEMA said filing an insurance claim will not affect eligibility for FEMA assistance and urged applicants to contact their insurance company and report damage promptly.

The agency warned that FEMA representatives may call from unfamiliar area codes and may need additional information. FEMA advised applicants to answer calls and to have important documents available to help with the application.

FEMA also noted that reporting damage through Crisis Track is not the same as applying for FEMA assistance. The agency said individuals must still complete a FEMA application to be considered for federal aid.
