Guntown man charged with 1st-degree murder after shooting victim dies, police say

The Tupelo Police Department said Chad D. Burleson, 30, of Guntown was arrested July 18 and charged with first-degree murder after a shooting victim died from his wounds.

Police said officers first responded July 17 to the North Mississippi Medical Center emergency room at 830 S. Gloster St. for a person with a gunshot wound. They also responded to the scene of the shooting at 1930 Briar Ridge Rd., a Sprint Mart, and detectives from the department’s Criminal Investigation Division gathered evidence and information.

According to the department, Burleson was arrested in a neighboring jurisdiction July 18 and initially charged with aggravated assault. A short time after the arrest, the victim died and the department said the charge was elevated to first-degree murder.

Tupelo Municipal Court Judge Weir ordered Burleson held without bond on July 19, the department said. The case will be presented to the Lee County grand jury, according to the Tupelo Police Department.

The Tupelo Police Department thanked the Lee County Sheriff’s Department, the Mississippi Department of Public Safety and the Guntown Police Department for their assistance in the investigation, the department said.
