The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency commemorated the 21st anniversary of Hurricane Katrina, which made landfall along the Mississippi Gulf Coast on Aug. 29, 2005, the agency said.
MEMA said the storm “forever changed Mississippi and our nation.” At the time, the agency said, Katrina was the largest natural disaster to strike the United States. In Mississippi, 238 lives were lost, MEMA said.
MEMA said it remembered those who lost their lives, the families and communities that were forever impacted, and the sacrifices made in the days, weeks and years that followed.
The agency also recognized the people who stepped up to help Mississippi recover and rebuild. “Their courage, compassion and commitment continue to inspire us,” MEMA said. “We remember. We honor. We will never forget.”
