MEMA warns Mississippi faces significant heat risk with heat indices up to 115 degrees Fahrenheit

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said in a post that much of the state is under Significant (Level 3) or Elevated (Level 2) heat risk, with heat indices reaching 105 to 115 degrees Fahrenheit in some areas.

The agency said prolonged exposure to high heat can cause heat exhaustion, heat stroke and other heat-related illnesses. MEMA added that hot days combined with warm nights can make it harder for people to cool down.

MEMA urged residents to stay in air-conditioned areas when possible and to bring pets inside. The agency also advised people to drink plenty of water, not wait until they are thirsty, and to wear light, loose-fitting clothing.

The agency warned never to leave children, older adults or pets in a vehicle and urged residents to check on friends, family and neighbors, especially during prolonged periods of extreme heat.
