Mississippi DOT reopens Highway 18 after pavement buckle

The Mississippi Department of Transportation said crews repaired a pavement buckle on the eastbound lanes of Highway 18 before Siwell Road in Hinds County and reopened the road about 9 p.m. June 11.

MDOT said the repairs smoothed the affected section but that ‘bump’ signs remain in place as a precaution. The agency said crews will continue to monitor the area to ensure the roadway settles properly.

MDOT said buckles can form when excessive heat causes concrete to expand and ‘buckle up.’ The department warned that the hottest days of summer can increase the risk of more buckles.

Drivers should exercise caution and watch for signs and roadway changes, MDOT said.
