Mississippi sees rise in railroad crossing crashes, fatalities in 2026
Mississippi has experienced an increase in crashes at public railroad crossings in 2026, with seven fatalities and 12 injuries reported so far this year. Last year, there were 31 crashes, resulting in five deaths and seven injuries, according to the Mississippi Department of Transportation.
On International Level Crossing Awareness Day, observed June 9 by the International Union of Railways, MDOT emphasized the importance of safety at railroad crossings statewide. Officials urged drivers to remain vigilant and adhere to safety tips, including the simple reminder: “See tracks? Think train!”
The department aims to raise awareness to prevent future crashes and save lives. Details about safety measures and tips are available on MDOT’s website.
