In 2024, one person was killed every 44 minutes in a drunk-driving crash, the U.S. Department of Transportation’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said.
Local law enforcement agencies said they are participating in a national, high-visibility enforcement campaign with the NHTSA through Labor Day to reduce impaired driving and improve road safety.
Officials told drivers to plan sober transportation before drinking. Law enforcement agencies said arranging a ride in advance is safer and far less costly than the consequences of a driving under the influence arrest.
The campaign, which officials identified by its slogan Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over, aims to remove impaired drivers from the road and remind the public that impairment clouds judgment and endangers others, the NHTSA said.
