Mississippi to widen I-55 and State Route 25 after lawmakers fund projects
Mississippi transportation officials announced plans to widen two major highways after the Legislature appropriated funding for the projects, the Mississippi Department of Transportation said.
Mississippi Transportation Commission Chairman Willie Simmons and MDOT Executive Director Brad White said the first project will add a lane in each direction on I-55 in Madison County between State Route 463 and Gluckstadt Road. MDOT said the work will expand the corridor from four to six lanes and include interstate lighting within the project limits.
The second project calls for widening State Route 25 in Rankin County to six lanes from Grant’s Ferry Road to State Route 471. MDOT said the project will also include construction of roundabouts at the interchange of State Route 25 and State Route 471.
MDOT attributed the work to funding provided by House Bill 1938, passed during the 2026 regular session of the Mississippi Legislature. The department said the projects are intended to address traffic demands, improve safety and support economic development in the two fast-growing regions.
