Missouri observes Summer Safety Day as lightning deaths rise in summer

Missouri is observing Summer Safety Day, organizers said, as the National Weather Service says fatalities from lightning strikes peak during the summer months.

The National Weather Service reported that 20 people died in the U.S. in 2025 after being struck by lightning.

The agency said the chance of being struck increases markedly when people remain outdoors during a thunderstorm.

The National Weather Service urged residents to review safety guidance, including what to do and what not to do during lightning, at weather.gov/safety/lightning.
