Belhaven softball advances to NCAA Division III World Series after super regional sweep
Belhaven University’s softball team secured a spot in the NCAA Division III World Series after defeating Wisconsin-Oshkosh 10-2 on Friday at Jim McCleod Field in Jackson. The Blazers swept the best-of-three super regional, improving their record to 42-10 and extending their postseason winning streak to 10 of 12 games.
Junior right fielder Liberty Gillahan, who earned MVP honors, highlighted the victory with a double, a triple, two runs scored, and three RBIs. Gillahan, a McComb native and granddaughter of longtime Parklane Academy football coach Charlie Newton, also contributed in the first game with a home run.
Junior pitcher Macy Funderburk, who improved her record to 20-5, pitched both super regional games. The West Monroe, Louisiana, native struck out 11 batters and walked only two in 12.1 innings. Coach Kevin Griffin praised her effectiveness, noting her ability to hit spots and use her rise ball to keep hitters honest.
Griffin, who earlier this season earned his 500th victory as Belhaven’s coach, called this team “the most talented” he has ever coached. The Blazers now turn their focus to winning their first national championship. Griffin’s son, Konnor Griffin, is a star outfielder for the Pittsburgh Pirates and recently signed a nine-year, $140 million contract. Griffin continues to serve as his son’s personal hitting instructor and remains heavily involved in his career.
Despite his commitments to his son’s professional career, Griffin credits his assistant coaches and players for their dedication. “Family comes first,” said Gillahan. Griffin emphasized the importance of team resilience, telling his players, “We’re not through,” after the super regional victory.
