The Mississippi Legislature passed legislation during a special session this week to change the state’s youth court system, the Mississippi Free Press reported.
The bill eliminates referees, adds chancellors and reforms confidentiality provisions in youth court proceedings, the news outlet said.
The measure also provides additional funding for detention centers and for youth diversion programs, the Mississippi Free Press reported.
Gov. Tate Reeves said the changes will ‘help youths who are able to be helped,’ the Mississippi Free Press reported.
