US soybean exports to China rebound in 2026 amid trade deal, but long-term outlook remains uncertain

U.S. soybean exports to China have increased in 2026 after the country resumed purchases following a trade agreement with the Trump administration, according to industry sources. Exports from January through March were up 57% compared to last year, driven by sales made during the off-season, USDA data shows.

Despite the uptick, analysts caution that China’s purchases still lag behind pre-trade war levels. Andrew Muhammad, an agricultural economics professor at the University of Tennessee, noted that China’s total soybean imports since September are less than half of previous years’ volumes. “We won’t really know until the end of this year whether China can meet its commitments,” he said.

Farmers and industry officials remain cautiously optimistic. Stefan Maupin, executive director of the Tennessee Soybean Promotion Council, said some positive trade movements have improved markets but that the long-term outlook is daunting. Many soybean farmers continue to face financial hardships, with recent data indicating nearly $110 million in losses last year. Experts say prices are still insufficient for many to break even.

Trade analysts highlight the role of government stockpiling in maintaining sales targets. Muhammad explained that government reserves allow China to meet purchase commitments temporarily, but this strategy may not be sustainable. Maupin added that China has a history of stockpiling and then releasing or reselling goods, which contributes to market instability.

USDA Deputy Secretary Stephen Vaden emphasized that the department remains confident China will fulfill its purchase obligations. Meanwhile, the U.S. continues to diversify its markets, with increased exports to countries like Egypt, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Japan. Industry representatives also explore expanding domestic processing capacity and developing new international partnerships to reduce reliance on China, according to officials.
