NWS Memphis warns of extreme heat and marginal severe storms Sunday

The National Weather Service in Memphis warned Sunday of dangerous heat and the potential for strong storms, issuing a heat advisory through 8 p.m. and a marginal severe-storm risk for parts of its forecast area.

NWS said the Delta region could see heat index values exceeding 105 F and urged residents to take it easy, stay hydrated and check on neighbors, children and pets.

Areas south of Interstate 40 are under a Level 1 of 5 — a marginal — risk for severe storms from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m., the agency said. NWS identified damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph as the main threat and minor, localized flooding from heavy downpours as a secondary threat. Storms were expected to move from the north-northwest to the south-southeast.

The weather service advised people with outdoor plans to have a way to receive warnings and to remain weather-aware while staying cool. All warnings and forecasts were issued by the National Weather Service in Memphis.
