Woman alleges nephew was stabbed at Hinds County jail; sheriff declines comment
Nicole Gibson says her nephew, Isaac Gibson, was stabbed more than 10 times in the back of the head and neck between 3 and 5 a.m. Thursday at the Hinds County Detention Center in Raymond. Gibson, 26, was charged with murder in connection with the April 2020 shooting of 18-year-old Trevarius Cooper at a south Jackson apartment complex.
Gibson provided Mississippi Today with what she described as a cellphone video showing the attack, which she said occurred after her nephew was moved to a different cell block. The grainy footage depicts several men in green-and-white uniforms beating another man on the floor, with one inmate stabbing him with a silver object, she said.
Gibson contacted the jail seeking information about the incident but was met with silence. She said staff transferred her to another phone line, but no one answered. After leaving a voicemail, she received no response. She believes the attack was retaliation for her nephew’s arrest related to Cooper’s death, which occurred in March at Pine Ridge Gardens apartments.
When reached for comment Thursday, Sheriff Tyree Jones told Mississippi Today he had not heard about the incident. Jones said he would call back if he received more information but has not responded to repeated calls and texts from the reporter.
Gibson said she was finally able to speak with her nephew, who is in the jail’s medical bay. He told her he did not know what he was stabbed with and asked her to help him get a tetanus shot. She expressed concern about the lack of communication from jail staff and the adequacy of medical care for her nephew.
The jail has been under the control of a court-appointed federal receiver since last fall. The facility was placed under federal oversight after the Department of Justice found conditions there violated inmates’ constitutional rights. Last year, six people died at the jail, including from a homicide and suspected drug overdoses, according to the Marshall Project.
