Clemens questions MLB warning to Giants pitchers over Bible verses on Pride hats
Former pitcher Roger Clemens criticized Major League Baseball’s warning to three San Francisco Giants pitchers who wrote Bible verses on team-issued hats during a Pride Night game, saying the league’s enforcement of uniform rules is inconsistent, Clemens said on “The Will Cain Show.”
MLB issued a warning to the players, saying the markings violated league uniform policies, the league said. Pitchers Landon Roupp, J.T. Brubaker and Ryan Walker wrote verses referencing Genesis 9:12-16, a passage about the rainbow covenant, according to the players.
Clemens said players alter gear routinely without discipline. “We alter our uniforms all the time with numbers or somebody that has passed away,” he told Cain. He cited examples of memorial markings and said religious messages should be treated like other personal expressions.
He suggested the league adopt an approach similar to special-design cleats, allowing religious messages on separate gear. “They do the special cleats where you can paint, do your cleats how you want it,” Clemens said.
The warning prompted a political response as well. Sen. Josh Hawley sent a letter to Commissioner Rob Manfred asking the league to justify the warnings, Hawley said.
