DOJ investigates William & Mary over race-based scholarship practices
The Department of Justice has launched an investigation into the College of William & Mary to determine if its scholarships and student benefits include unlawful race-based criteria, the agency announced Monday.
The DOJ’s Civil Rights Division said it is conducting a compliance review to check for potential violations of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which prohibits discrimination based on race, color or national origin in federally funded programs.
Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon stated that awarding scholarships or opportunities based on race is illegal and violates the Constitution. She emphasized the department’s commitment to addressing race-based preferences at the university.
