Jordan Henderson ruled out of World Cup after fall; undergoes surgery

Jordan Henderson was ruled out of the World Cup after fracturing his wrist when he fell over a pitch-side advertising board during celebrations, England said Monday. The 36-year-old underwent surgery after the injury, the team said.

The incident occurred late Sunday at Estadio Azteca after England’s 3-2 win over Mexico. Video footage showed Henderson attempting to climb over the board to reach traveling supporters, losing his footing and landing awkwardly on his wrist. Medical staff rushed onto the field, administered oxygen and stretchered him off, according to match reports.

England captain Harry Kane initially downplayed the injury after the game, saying, “Yeah Hendo just fell over there. I think he’s OK. Something to do with his arm,” according to postmatch remarks. Henderson had been on the bench for the match and was booked in the 98th minute for touchline protests, match reports said.

The game featured a brace from Jude Bellingham and a Harry Kane penalty for England. Mexico scored through Julian Quiñones and a late Raúl Jiménez penalty. England defender Jarell Quansah received a straight red card during the match and will be suspended for the quarterfinal, the team said.

While manager Thomas Tuchel and the squad flew to Kansas City to prepare for Saturday’s quarterfinal against Norway, Henderson remained hospitalized in Mexico City, England said.
