Rob Base, Hip-Hop Pioneer Behind ‘It Takes Two,’ Dies at 59
Rob Base, a rapper best known for his partnership with DJ E-Z Rock and their hit song ‘It Takes Two,’ died May 22 at age 59, his family announced on social media.
The family statement, shared on Instagram, said Base died peacefully surrounded by his family after a private fight with cancer. The post described him as a hip-hop legend whose music helped shape a generation and brought joy worldwide. It also called him a loving father, family man, friend, and creative force whose impact will be felt for years to come.
Many in the entertainment industry expressed their condolences. DJ and record producer Kid Capri wrote on Instagram that he was shocked to hear about Base’s death, noting they had recently spoken. Easy Mo Bee also shared a tribute, extending condolences to Base’s family and loved ones.
Base, born Robert Ginyard, rose to fame with DJ E-Z Rock in 1988. Their song ‘It Takes Two’ became a crossover hit, reaching the Billboard Hot 100 and earning platinum certification. The track remains one of the most influential songs in hip-hop history and has been widely sampled and featured in various media over the decades.
The duo had known each other since childhood and performed together in Harlem before signing record deals. DJ E-Z Rock died in 2014 due to complications from diabetes. Despite his commercial success, Base continued touring and mentoring younger artists through his company, Funky Base Inc., according to reports.
