Mississippi emergency agency warns of dangerous heat, offers Fourth of July safety tips

The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency urged residents to take safety precautions for the Fourth of July weekend and warned of ‘dangerous heat’ across much of the state, the agency said in a social media post.

MEMA advised people to practice fireworks safety and to keep a bucket of water or a hose nearby, the post said. The agency also warned against leaving grills unattended and urged keeping children and pets at a safe distance.

The agency advised swimming only in designated areas and supervising children around water. To cope with the heat, MEMA recommended drinking plenty of water, wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing and taking frequent breaks in the shade or in air conditioning, the post said.

MEMA urged residents to check on older adults, neighbors and anyone without reliable cooling and warned never to leave children or pets in a parked vehicle. The agency closed the post by wishing Mississippians a ‘fun, safe and happy Fourth of July,’ the post said.
