NWS warns of severe storms; Mississippi agency urges heat precautions
The National Weather Service forecast a slight risk (Level 2 of 5) for severe storms across portions of north and northeast Mississippi on Thursday afternoon into the early evening, the agency said. The NWS said damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph and quarter-size hail were possible.
The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency said dangerous heat would continue across the state each afternoon through Saturday, July 4, with heat index values reaching 105 to 115 degrees in some areas.
MEMA urged residents to have multiple ways to receive warnings, limit outdoor activities during the hottest part of the day, drink plenty of water and take frequent breaks if working outside, the agency said. The agency also warned never to leave children or pets in a parked vehicle.
MEMA advised residents to follow local meteorologists for the latest forecasts and to monitor updates from the National Weather Service.
