Booneville to install Axon Outpost license-plate cameras at 35 locations

The City of Booneville and the Booneville Police Department said they will deploy the Axon Outpost automatic license plate recognition, or ALPR, camera system at 35 locations in the coming months.

The department said the fixed cameras automatically read license plates on passing vehicles. The system also provides live-streaming video and vehicle attribute recognition, including make, model and color, the city said.

Officials said the technology is intended to help law enforcement respond more quickly to Amber Alerts, locate stolen vehicles, find wanted suspects and support investigations. The department said it will give officers real-time awareness of specific locations and help close cases faster while reducing blind spots.

The police department said the system will not be used for traffic citations and that no traffic violation notices will be mailed as a result of the cameras. The department also said the system reads license plates but does not track individual people or store personal driving histories beyond law enforcement needs, and that data will be handled according to department policies and privacy standards.

The Booneville Police Department said it already uses Axon Tasers, Axon body cameras and the Axon Fleet Dashboard system for patrol vehicles. Residents with questions about the program, how the technology works or data policies were asked to contact the Booneville Police Department at 662-728-5611.
