A heat advisory is in effect for portions of east Arkansas and northwest Mississippi as heat index values rise as high as 109 degrees this afternoon, the National Weather Service office in Memphis said.

The office urged residents to “take appropriate precautions to protect yourself from heat illness,” the post said.

Forecasters said slightly cooler temperatures and lower humidity are expected for the remainder of the week.
