The Mississippi Emergency Management Agency (MEMA) said extreme heat warnings are in effect for north and central Mississippi, and heat advisories cover the rest of the state.
MEMA said heat index values between 105 and 115 degrees are expected, with high temperatures in the mid to upper 90s.
MEMA warned that heat-related illnesses can develop quickly, especially during prolonged outdoor activity.
MEMA urged residents to drink plenty of water, even if they do not feel thirsty, and to limit outdoor activity during the hottest part of the day. It also advised taking frequent breaks in air-conditioned spaces, wearing lightweight, light-colored clothing, checking on older adults, children, neighbors and people without air conditioning, and never leaving children or pets in parked vehicles.
MEMA advised people to know the signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. If someone is confused, loses consciousness or stops sweating, MEMA said to call 911 immediately.
