Miss. DOT warns against leaving children, pets in cars during weekend heat

The Mississippi Department of Transportation urged motorists in a social media post not to leave children or pets in vehicles as a heat wave is expected Aug. 14-16, saying parked cars can become dangerously hot in minutes.

The agency said 20 children have died in hot cars so far this year and reiterated its advice to never leave children or pets alone in a vehicle for any amount of time.

Mississippi Department of Transportation officials advised drivers to bring children and pets inside or leave them at home, check air conditioning before driving, keep passengers out of direct sun and double-check back seats before locking a vehicle. The post also encouraged people to report concerns if they see a child or animal unattended in a car.

The agency urged residents to take precautions and stay cool during the weekend heat. The warnings were posted on the department’s social media accounts, the post said.
